About the Stroke of Midnight book!
The Stroke of Midnight chronicles moments of my experience suffering a stroke, paying particular attention to the physical, emotional, and financial considerations typically associated with a medical emergency. Primarily using anecdotal approach, I recount the night when the stroke hit, and the subsequent events that followed. Throughout the text, I emphasize the likely importance of belief, using generally straightforward language in an effort to create a thorough yet accessible resource. Part memoir, part guide, the volume incorporates an understanding of diverse scientific principles, furnishing data from various sources. Overall, my contribution is designed to commemorate phases of my journey as well as to enlighten, inspire, and provoke thought for the reader who may confront similar circumstances. |

A stroke is a medical emergency. Prompt treatment could mean the difference between life and death. Early treatment can also minimize damage to your brain and potential disability. In the United States, stroke is the leading cause of death and leading cause of adult disability. Only cardiovascular disease and cancer cause more annual deaths. Approximately 750,000 Americans experience a stroke and approximately 160,000 of these people die from stroke each year. The good news is fewer Americans die from strokes now, than died from strokes 20 or 30 years ago. Improvement in the control of major risk factors smoking, high blood pressure and high cholesterol may be responsible for the decline. I am one of those statistics Not only was this a personal life-changing situation, but a challenge in both attitude and activity. Suffering a stroke, I call my “midnight” because, just as one night automatically changes into the next morning precisely at midnight and also in the twinkling of an eye, the present becomes past, the future becomes present, and the past...history. There was no opportunity of accepting or rejecting this change, rather, it was forced into my life just as an automobile accident may cause severe head trauma. There was no warning, alternative plan or decision, nor time to really plan on my new life. Little did I realize my life was going to be different from now on, because of that brief instant.

A stroke is something you have, not who you are!
SOME STROKE STATISTICS: According to National Stroke Association (NSA), of the 750,000 strokes per year, more than 100,000 are recurrent strokes. NSA further estimates there is up to a 14% increased risk of recurrent stroke within one year and up to a 40% increased risk within 5 years of the initial stroke. Stroke is the third largest killer in America. About once in every 45 seconds a day, a person suffers a stroke. Men are more likely to have a stroke, but more women die as a result of stroke. Not only is stroke a killer, but it is the leading cause for disability.
